It starts with a morning in the space, ideally in bad weather, and a survey. Then a hand-drawn masterplan at 1:100 with the levels, the views and the bones, and a planting plan with every plant named and counted. You get both as drawings you can read and a contractor can price.
Design fee from £1,800 for a courtyard, from £4,500 for a garden over half an acre.Installations for rooms that need something alive in them: a restaurant's long table, a hotel's hall, a barn for one wedding. Branches, grasses, seed heads and living material, built to last weeks or months and changed with the season.
From £600 for a single installation; seasonal contracts by arrangement.The plan names the plants; this gets them. Bought from six nurseries in Norfolk and Suffolk I have used for years, delivered in the right week, and laid out in the beds by me before any of them go in.
Charged at cost plus 15%.I manage the landscaping contractor, plant the borders with my own small team, and come back four times in the first year to edit: move what has sulked, thin what has bolted, and teach whoever will be looking after it.
First-year care £1,200, or included on gardens over an acre.
Because you can read it at the kitchen table, because it makes me slow down and think about every corner, and because a contractor can measure from it. Software comes in later for the levels and the quantities, never for the idea.
